Time to Man UP!

by VanFloyd on June 8, 2011

To be the man you want to be takes diligence and the support of a community.

It’s time to man up. Get honest with yourself. Quit BS-ing your way through life. Start living with some emotional integrity. Take a risk and do something good for yourself right now. Sign up for the NWTA weekend or contact us to sit in a circle of men.

The ManKind Project is a network of men who share experiences and wisdom to support self-awareness, positive change and transformation. A community of peers, we take risks to improve our lives and help others. Any man that wants to become more than he has become so far is welcome and will be supported. All kinds of men show up. Non-religious and non-profit. We have simple ground rules premised on taking personal responsibility and supporting each other. We help each man create safety, meaning and challenge for himself and his world.

When a man does that for himself with the support of his brothers it extends into the world, and has a profound positive impact on families, friendships and communities. Better health, more happiness, less anger, closer relationships with loved ones, greater clarity, greater purpose. Take action and make the change you’ve imagined. Become the man you want to be.

Create trusting and open relationships with men. The way we see it, the world really needs men who have the strength to get real with one another and work together as brothers. Go-it-alone, dominating, chest pounding, ‘tough it up’ or ‘laugh it off’ masculinity are facades that cover up the truly effective, powerful, compassionate, nurturing, mature man.

We don’t get together to be friends, although that happens. We gather to create powerful bonds between men, whether we like each other or not. A ‘regular guy’ can step into this space and be empowered to speak the unvarnished truth about his life, which can set him free. We’re not here to put on a show for each other. We’re not here to set ourselves up in opposition to a perceived ‘other’ in the world. We’re not here to offer salvation. We’re here to help each other cut through the bullshit we learned about being a man. We’re here to step through the fear of showing up authentically, warts and all, in our lives and loves. We’re here to find and explore our self-made purpose.

If you struggle with commitment, with discipline, with emotional honesty, with feelings of powerlessness or inadequacy, with anger, frustration, depression – this kind of bonding will help you break old patterns and find YOUR PLACE in a community.

If you are outwardly successful and looking to become more integrated with other parts of your life – this place will help you explore, refine and express the parts of yourself that may be hiding out in the shadows and holding you back.

If you have never felt safe or at ease in a group of men – this place will help you confront and change that. Your success depends on your efforts.

If you are a change agent — working with others for the good of society — this kind of bonding is essential to create sustainable solutions in the world.

Without moving beyond ‘connection by cause’ and into ‘bonded commitment’, efforts to create and sustain community will fail over and over and over. Movements fail not because they lack good ideas or good organization, but because they lack mature bonding – the kind of connection that allows individuals and groups to overcome personal and psychological blocks and resolve interpersonal conflicts in a way that energizes and focuses rather than diluting and diverting the efforts.

This is what we’ve been doing for 25 years in the ManKind Project.

Is it easy? No. Growing into one’s fullness, becoming mature isn’t necessarily easy or comfortable. That’s why most men act like immature boys when faced with tough issues – emotional issues.

Is it worth it? Yes. Make this commitment to yourself and then act, supported by your brothers. Everything in your world will change, for the better.
